Farewell, Vue Weekly

Farewell, Vue Weekly

I have resigned from Vue Weekly. As of July 6, 2016 I will no longer be Dish/News Editor for the paper. This was a very difficult decision and not one I made lightly, as Vue has been such a huge part of my life for so long (over six years, now). But this was the right choice in light of the direction that the paper has been taking, especially in recent weeks.

It’s no secret that print media, and especially the newspaper industry, are not in a good place right now. The old business model is no longer viable and if organizations wish to survive, they need to make radical changes. Vue has been making some changes, but unfortunately I’m not confident that they are the right ones. I could be wrong, of course, but I was no longer comfortable being part of that organization.

So, I’m back to being a freelancer. I’ll be updating this long-neglected blog more often now, and expanding my contacts with various publications. Hopefully soon my writing will appear in other places.

I’d like to thank all of the wonderful people that I worked with at Vue over the time I worked there, as well as all our great readers. Vue was created for you over 20 years ago, to provide an alternative voice to the mainstream media. I may have been an editor for only a short time, but that experience has forever shaped the type of journalist – and person – I’ve become. It’s my sincere hope that something rises up soon to fill in the steadily increasing gaps in local community coverage and alternative news voices – and I’m going to work hard to contribute to that.
